Auld Lang Syne

I was listening to this podcast episode today where John Green reviews the classic New Year’s song, Auld Lang Syne. Despite butchering it every year under the influence of champagne, I’ve never read the lyrics.

In particular, he highlighted the fourth chorus:

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

It describes people sharing time together, only to be separated by roaring seas. As a result of time, neglect, or death, there are people who care about me (and whom I care about) that I will never see again. It’s a tragic and sobering thought.

To those people in my life, whoever you are, wherever you are, cheers to you 🍻.
